Doodhpathri Exploration 2026
Where lush green meadows roll into the horizon, kissed by the frosty waters of the Shaliganga River. Our Doodhpathri tour packages transport you to Kashmir's most pristine and offbeat alpine paradise.
An Untouched Alpine Wonder
Located just 42 km from Srinagar in the Budgam district, Doodhpathri translates to "Valley of Milk." Legend says the famous saint Sheikh ul Aalam Sheikh Noor din Noorani prayed here, and when he pricked the ground for water, milk flowed out instead.
The Shaliganga River
The river flows rapidly over smooth boulders, creating white, frothy water that looks like milk from a distance. It's the perfect spot for a tranquil afternoon picnic.
Endless Green Meadows
Unlike Gulmarg, the meadows of Doodhpathri are incredibly vast and devoid of heavy commercialization. It is a haven for those who seek solitude and nature walks.
Life in the High Pastures
Doodhpathri is primarily a grazing ground for the Gujjar and Bakarwal shepherds. During the summer months, they bring their flocks of sheep and cattle to graze on the rich grass.
Mud Huts (Kothas)
You'll see traditional wooden and mud huts dotting the landscape, a testament to sustainable nomadic architecture.
Horse Riding
Hire a pony from the local herders to explore the deeper reaches of the forest and meadows safely.
Local Hospitality
Experience the warmth of the Gujjar community, offering fresh noon chai (pink tea) to passing travelers.
Planning Your Doodhpathri Day Trip
Doodhpathri is an ideal day-trip destination from Srinagar. Due to its offbeat nature, commercial hotels do not exist in the immediate meadow area, ensuring its pristine beauty is preserved.
1. The Journey from Srinagar
The drive takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. You'll pass through Budgam, surrounded by apple orchards, walnut trees, and dense pine forests as you gain altitude. The road is well-maintained but gets steep towards the end.
2. What to Pack
Even if Srinagar is hot, Doodhpathri can be chilly due to the wind and the freezing river water. Pack a light jacket, wear comfortable walking shoes (the grass can be slippery), and bring a picnic mat!
3. Food and Facilities
Facilities are basic. There are a few JKTDC cafeterias and local dhabas serving Maggi, tea, and Kashmiri snacks. We often recommend our guests carry a packed lunch to enjoy a picnic by the Shaliganga river.
